Every hour we need You, Draw us closer to You, through songs, prayer, Bible study, and whatever it takes, move our hearts closer to You. We know the end of the story and God certainly didn’t forsaken Jesus, though I can’t imagine what type of physical, emotional, and spiritual pain He was going through, but Jesus approached God’s throne with grace and confidence and we too can do the same. In Matthew 27:46 we read “About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” ).
Jesus called on the Lord, especially during His last hour on earth. I am thankful that He draws me close and lightens my load through prayer and music reflection. I love the fact that the Lord speaks to me through Contemporary Christian music. Whatever our time of need may be, it doesn’t matter how big or how small, we can approach Him and lay our requests at His feet. We need to have that confidence that we can go to our Lord whenever we need to.
Let’s look at Hebrews 4:16 – Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. To keep that constant flow of communication keeps us on track and brings us a sense of peace that only He can provide. It doesn’t even have to be at a crisis point, just letting Him know that we need Him – every hour or every day – I imagine that brings a smile to His face as we draw nearer to Him. Why not sing Him this chorus and reach out to Him both through words and song? I think God likes it when we call on Him throughout the day. In fact just before I started to type this devotional, I found myself in a situation which required an immediate connection to our Lord. There are days when I feel like life is getting the best of me and I just start to quietly sing the chorus of this song – Lord I Need You, Oh I need You, every hour I need You. I need God every single second of every single day and sometimes I need to remind myself of this at various points along the day. For a new heart in Christ, leads to Christ like behaviour and attitudes. If I had to give you an anthem for my life it would be – Lord I Need You by Matt Maher. Today as you start a new day, lean on Jesus, admit you need HIM and ask God to give you a new heart. It is only through God’s grace and mercy that we can be changed, from the inside out.
Jesus makes it so clear, that those who admit that they need Him, those who realise they need His help, will be the ones that inherit the Kingdom of Heaven, salvation. Instead, Jesus shows us at the beginning of His teachings, that all we need to do, is realise that we can’t live without His help. And to be honest that probably wasn’t Jesus’ intention – to make us feel inadequate to live up to His standards. In and of our own strength and will, we will never be able to live up to the standards of Holiness presented to us in chapters 5 -7. He shows us that our problem is in our hearts. Jesus shows His disciples through these chapters, that our sin is more than just actions, but attitudes. Matthew, chapters 5 -7 gives a detailed and extensive list of God’s holy standards, highlighting that outward action, and ‘knowledge’ in and of itself, is not enough to be saved. Yet nothing could be further from the truth, and is the very reason why Jesus taught His disciples and followers in His sermon on the Mount. Guaranteed to go to Heaven because of their extensive knowledge of scriptures Guaranteed to gain favour from God because of their numerous works and acts of ‘kindness’ Guaranteed to be blessed because they obeyed God’s laws without wavering.
The Pharisees in the New Testament, thought the same about themselves. “ God blesses those who are poor and realise their need for Him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.”ĭo you ever get days when you think you have got it all sorted?
